Troubleshooting

Fixes for the most common eyeHear issues: missing captions, permissions, accuracy problems, and more.

Most issues come down to permissions. eyeHear needs both Microphone and Speech Recognition access to caption. You can check these any time in iOS Settings → eyeHear.

No captions are appearing

  • Make sure Microphone and Speech Recognition are enabled for eyeHear in iOS Settings → eyeHear.
  • Confirm someone is speaking within range of the microphone and that nothing is covering it.
  • Close eyeHear fully and reopen it, then start a new session.
  • Check that your device isn’t muted or that another app isn’t using the microphone.

Captions are inaccurate

  • Move closer to the speaker and reduce background noise where you can.
  • Ask people to speak clearly at a natural, steady pace.
  • Check that your device language matches the language being spoken.
  • Make sure no case, cover, or your hand is blocking the microphone.

The app won’t record or hear anything

  • Open iOS Settings → eyeHear and turn Microphone and Speech Recognition back on.
  • Quit any other app that may be using the microphone (such as a call or voice recorder).
  • If you’re using Bluetooth headphones or an external mic, try disconnecting them to test the built-in microphone.
  • Relaunch eyeHear after changing any of these settings.

Captions stopped partway through a conversation

  • Tap the listen button to start a new session, since long pauses can end one.
  • Very long sessions can time out, so stop and start a fresh session if captions stop updating.
  • Make sure your device hasn’t locked or that eyeHear hasn’t been moved to the background.

eyeHear is slow, freezing, or crashing

  • Update to the latest version of eyeHear from the App Store.
  • Restart your iPhone or iPad.
  • Make sure your device has enough free storage and battery.
  • If problems continue, delete and reinstall the app. Your settings reset, but you can start fresh.

I tapped “Don’t Allow” on a permission by mistake

  • Open iOS Settings and scroll to eyeHear, or go to Settings → Privacy & Security.
  • Enable both Microphone and Speech Recognition for eyeHear.
  • Reopen eyeHear and try captioning again.
